Tomatis® Method

The Tomatis® Method, developed by Dr Alfred Tomatis a French ear, nose and throat specialist, is a form of sound and listening therapy found to be effective in treating a range of listening and communication problems, or auditory processing disorders (APD). In short, it is an advanced and innovative form of neurosensory stimulation training to improve brain function.

The Tomatis® Method is practised in more than 75 countries across the world helping more than 200,000 individuals each year. Here in South Australia and Victoria we have one of the few Australian Certified Level 4 Tomatis® Consultants, Jennifer Muller, who is using the Tomatis® Method to help both children and adults to address their motor skills as well as emotional and cognitive abilities.

More than helping us hear

Dr Tomatis discovered the ears play a vital role in a range of functions – beyond simply helping us to hear – including:

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Language
  • Reading
  • Learning
  • Balance
  • Coordination
  • Motor Skills
  • Emotion Regulation
  • Memory
  • Attention

This led him to develop a non-invasive auditory therapy technique to stimulate and enhance the function of the ears which, in many cases, led to improvement of these related functions.

Who it can help

The Tomatis® Method has been found to provide benefits in a number of auditory and learning disorders, including speech problems, auditory processing disorder, vertigo, dyslexia, learning difficulties, dyspraxia, ADD/ADHD, autism and attention and memory.

Children who suffer from an auditory function disorder are a key audience and their parents are actively involved with their children throughout the initial loop of the program at no extra cost.

The auditory training requires intensive sessions and is monitored by repeated listening tests and controlled interviews.

Babies <2 years old, sensitive children and hypotonic people can also benefit from the Tomatis® Method using the bone conduction belt or glove instead of traditional headphones.

Adults can also benefit especially in the areas of stress and anxiety, dyslexia and Auditory Processing Disorder (APD).

See Tomatis Registration and Price for more details.

Benefits

The program can deliver:

  • Improved focus
  • Enhanced reading/comprehension skills
  • Reduced stress and or anxiety
  • Less brain fog
  • Increased self-awareness
  • Improved memory and attention

The Tomatis® Method is not a closed model in helping adults and kids with issues. It isn’t a “fix all”, but can be an important modality in addressing auditory processing disorder by complementing other allied health modalities.

Resources

The ear opens a person up to the world through hearing and listening. Using the Tomatis® Method and by principle of neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to change), people with various difficulties and disorders have the opportunity to improve their lives.

There are over 80 scientific papers and case studies demonstrating the effectiveness of the Tomatis® Method that you can explore. For more information, please visit Tomatis Research and Resources here.
